More than two thousand years ago, Europe north of the Mediterranean was dominated by the Celts, a collection of peoples with shared traditions of language, art and culture. They travelled in all directions, fighting and trading with the alternate cultures they encountered, and leaving in their wake superbly crafted jewellery, weapons and household objects. Today, these spectacular artifacts allow us to appreciate the artistic brilliance and sophisticated vision of a civilization that stretched from Ireland to Turkey. The Celtic artists drew inspiration from the infinitely subtle mutability of nature. The merest suggestion of human, animal or plant form might be achieved through the breathtaking command of curving, swirling lines of marvelous ingenuity and delicacy. While
there is much about the Celts of which we remain ignorant, the surviving
masterworks of Celtic art are witness to the glories of a truly great civilization. The following designs are available as brooches and pendants, with some exceptions;
Sacred SpiralsThe swirling, spiraling patterns of Celtic art suggest their artists abhorred a vacuum and filled every space. They loved fluid patterns, in which the shapes of humans and animals emerge and dissolve before our eyes while stunning circular forms display its power.
The Eternal KnotThe eternal knot, tracing an unbroken path without beginning or end, is a feature of Celtic book decoration. To the scribe it was a perfect expression of the boundlessness of God and the infinite diversity of his creation.
Hounds Celtic folklore is full of magical hounds, such as the Cwn Annwn that accompany the Welsh heroes in the Mabinogion, or the magical hounds of the Sluagh, the night flying fairies found in Irish and Scottish folklore.
Our brooches are inlaid with semi precious stones.
Carnelian, Blue Agate, Green Agate, Mother of Pearl, Hematine.
We can inlay different stones to order if required.
